In the original version of the Rip van Winkel tale, he awoke from a falling dream to find himself actually plunging towards the earth, as a result of a rather cruel prank played on his slumbering form. Not so cruel as to murder him, though, the perpetrators had provided a parachute, which is how the rip-cord gets its name.
